Common Symptoms of Covid-19

Recently there has been a correlation between a new strain of flu and a relatively new strain of the virus which can also be called covid-19. The virus, which was first identified in Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries, was recently found to be circulating in Europe as well. This discovery has caused an increase in the surveillance of this virus. It is important to note that while this virus is new and is being studied, it is not thought to be an established cause of the current outbreak of H1N1 swine flu.

For a positive molecular test for covid-19, one must do a rapid one-step diagnostic test with polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) to confirm the diagnosis. To perform these tests, the patient should have at least three polymerase chain reactions performed within ten days of exposure. PCR amplifies specific DNA strands that resemble the flu strains. These strands will then be mixed with normal mucus and blood samples to generate a fragment of the virus that can be detected with a various assays. In most cases a person who is positive for a virus-associated symptom will be instructed to do multiple experiments in order to confirm a diagnosis.

Because the virus has only been recently associated with an increased incidence of respiratory illness, there are currently no preventive measures in place for patients who suffer from covid-19. However, as the virus is becoming more widely recognized, healthcare providers are educating patients and families about the symptoms associated with this condition, and the signs and symptoms that may occur with the virus. A high level of vigilance is necessary to avoid the spread of this pandemic. Individuals concerned with their health and well-being should consult a physician if they exhibit any of the following symptoms: cough or shortness of breath, persistent chest and throat infection, weight loss, swollen glands, yellowish eyes, or a serious fever.
