Dietary Fibre and the Importance of Nutrition – What are Food to You?

We are surrounded by food everywhere we go. You can walk down any street anywhere in the world and find it just about everywhere, including at the grocery store. When you go to the store, do you see all the food? What is food to you? Food is any material eaten to give nutrition to the organisms living in it.

In essence food is alive, and has an instinctive drive to feed that drives it to seek out food and kill and eat it to survive. Food is a source of vital nutrition that is required by living things to maintain their existence. In fact, food is the most important basic need of all living things. In its simplest form, food is food-a substance that an organism feeds on to survive.

The first line of defence in any body is its immune system. Food particles that are complex in shape are more digestible than others and pass more slowly through the intestines. Carbohydrates are broken down into simple compounds which are metabolised by the liver into glucose, the body’s primary source of fuel and nutrition. Fruits and vegetables contain a large amount of carbohydrates, which, in combination with other nutrients and dietary fibre, make up the majority of the diet of a human being. A well balanced diet consists of around 40% carbohydrates, 30% proteins, 5% fat and a small amount of vitamins.
