What Exactly Is Travel?

Travel is the transfer of individuals between different, often remote, geographical locations. Travel is usually done by foot, vehicle, bicycle, train, plane, bus or other mode, with luggage or no luggage, and is either one-way or round trip. In addition to this, travel includes such common activities as sightseeing, nightlife, dining, sports, recreation, business, cultural, educational, private, public, or even for obtaining a passport. These days, anyone can enjoy the best vacations in the world since travel has become so accessible.

Travel as it occurs between two places may be internal or external, and may be internal or external in length. It can also be a single journey or repeated journeys within a single area. We all have heard stories about people who crossed the world just for a holiday, but what exactly constitutes travel? When we talk about travel, it can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. For some, it’s the journey, while for others, it may simply be a change in scenery or even just heading out for a night out in a new city.

For some, the end goal of travel is to get to a destination, whether this be for work or pleasure. Others like to travel for the sheer experience of it – a chance to see different places, meet new people and sample new cultures. While these are valid motivations for travelling, there are more universal travel goals and experiences which allow us to measure the journey by its level of success. Whether it’s connecting with someone far away through travel, or simply getting from point A to point B, measuring the success of any trip is possible through the use of travel metrics.
